Penecost 2024

by Brenda Rice on May 13, 2024

Pentecost Sunday is a time in the church calendar when you will see a great deal of visual elements being used during Worship.
With images of flames, wind, as well as the descending dove, all playing pivotal roles in the story of Pentecost.

The image of the descending Dove comes from Mark 1:10
And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove upon him.

The images of the Winds and the flames come from Acts 2: 1-4
When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

The centerpiece image was one that we created in 2009. I was very happy to have the help from some talented church members in painting this art piece.

Can you see all of the elements represented here?

The red, orange, and yellow for flames, the white sheer fabric for the dove, and the long blue flowing strips of fabric, they represent the the wind.
And the repeating of the three items represents the Holy Trinity, God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit.

Below are images from 2009 as the art piece was painted.

After drawing out the flames with chalk on 12 pieces or black foam core, the painting began with the help of some wonderful church members.

Multiple layers of acrylic paint were add and left to dry. Each panel was attached with metal rings in order to give movement to the art piece.
