Creating Space for an image of Peace 2024

Himmeli

Himmeli is a form of folk art that has been embraced internationally for hundreds of years.
The thing the drew me to this art form was the back story, the rich history and deep meaning it carries threw time. The message of a universal peace. The word Himmeli has German and Swedish roots—emerging from the word for “sky” or “heaven” in each. Its use in the Finnish language has no translation.
Himmeli is a Swedish word for Sky or Heaven.
It is said that Himmeli is a traditional Finnish ornament made from straw or reeds. It is typically suspended above the dinner table during the holiday season to symbolize Order and a Harmonious Universe. They positively influence their surroundings and people around them, and through their shape, a himmeli expresses the concept of light being reborn and Peace.

With all the uneasyness in our country during the elections I felt this would be a craft we could all use. Also with my need to recycle and repurpose, I searched for resource options. First I tried using the dried stocks from Day-lilies but they are very thin and didn't hold up well. Next option was dried Siberian Iris bloom stems, these were stronger but too think. Finally, I choose using the church's over abundance of plastic coffee stir sticks, they were are good size and were sturdy enough to hold their shape, despite the fact they lacked the natural element (later I found recycled paper straws that worked too).

After extensive researching of this art form, I approached the ministerial staff with the idea of an inter-generational craft that could be done for the Advent season. It was approved and I started by teaching Youth one Wednesday night, they did great! Then on Nov 24 I lead a church wide workshop on making Himmelis. I pre-made 100s of kits some that were 90% completed and others with just the elements needs, some were with needle and thread, while others were wire (no threading the needle required). I enjoyed it and was grateful for all those that tried, whether they were proficient at making them or not.

We used the Himmelis through the Advent decor in our church. I hope you try creating one, there are many different ways and shapes to explore. But most of all you experience the  beauty of this art form and embrace the feeling of peace and positivity it brings.
