Being Baptist

Baptists have a noble history dating back to the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Baptists’ great gift to the world is a strong belief that everyone should have religious freedom. This freedom implies personal decision making about one’s religious beliefs.  That means that everyone of sound mind and spirit stands before God and is personally accountable for their faith or unfaith.

Baptists, historically, don’t focus on doctrine, as much as they focus on how they, as followers of Jesus Christ, are to relate to God and live with other believers. Baptist are at their best when they emphasize the priesthood of all believers, autonomy of the local church, and the separation of church and state.

The word ‘Baptist’ sometimes has a negative connotation because of the news that some Baptist make in our world today, but ‘Baptist’ is a very good word which stands for spiritual freedom, creativity in biblical interpretation, and mutual respect in human relationships.
